The Specification

I've finally placed an order for a Caterham 420R SV kit and I'm very excited about building it. I've always wanted to build my own car and after much research the Caterham seemed to be the best choice for my needs (which was what I had always wanted to build since my teenage years!)

I have very little experience with the hands on mechanics of cars, other than changing brake discs/pads and bleeding the brake fluid on my own Seat Leon Cupra R way back in my 20's. However I do have quite a good knowledge of all the theory behind the mechanics and how all the bits work together which should help me out!

After reaching a point where I can actually commit to a build like this I was soon massively overwhelmed by all the options that were in front of me, The amount of times that I changed my mind was ridiculous, especially the colour choice!

So, what have I gone for:

  • Caterham 420 R SV (I'm 6ft4 and don't really fit in a standard one!)
  • Large Chassis (That's what the SV stands for above!)
  • Lowered Floors
  • Battery cut off switch
  • Track day rollbar (It looks better and makes the chassis stiffer)
  • Full Windscreen hood and side (I'll be driving it on the road)
  • Suede Momo steering wheel with quick release
  • Heater
  • Map Pocket (after testing a car, there is not much storage space)
  • Fully carpeted interior
  • Heated Carbon Seats with Padding
  • 620s style dash (much nicer than the standard dash)
  • 13" Black wheels (6" front, 8" back - better handling)
  • LED headlights
  • Clear indicators
  • Uprated Vented Brake Discs
  • Carbon Vinyl Hood

And for the look, I originally wanted Ballistic Orange with the black stripes, however after seeing a few red ones, I decided they look a lot more modern.

  • Exocet Red
  • Double stripe decals in white, with black pinstripe, white Caterham lettering
  • Painted 7 Grille in white
  • Red 4 point harness seatbelts
